3-Day Hands-On Workshop on Basic Hematology Techniques

This workshop provides practical training in fundamental hematology laboratory techniques, including blood smear preparation, cell counting, hemoglobin estimation, and result interpretation. It is designed to build strong diagnostic laboratory skills using standard, safe, and educational methods.

Day 1: Blood Smear Preparation & Microscopic Examination

Concepts Covered

  • Introduction to hematology and blood components

  • Principles of peripheral blood smear preparation

  • Overview of blood cell morphology

Hands-On Training

  • Peripheral blood smear preparation

  • Staining techniques

    • Leishman stain or

    • Giemsa stain

  • Microscopic analysis of stained smears

    • Identification of RBCs, WBCs, and platelets

    • Observation of cell size, shape, and staining patterns

Skills Gained

  • Proper smear spreading technique

  • Staining and washing protocols

  • Basic morphological assessment of blood cells

Day 2: Cell Counting & Hemoglobin Estimation

Concepts Covered

  • Principles of manual blood cell counting

  • Clinical relevance of RBC, WBC, and hemoglobin values

Hands-On Training

  • RBC and WBC counting using a haemocytometer

  • Calculation of cell counts per microliter of blood

  • Hemoglobin estimation using

    • Sahli’s (acid hematin) method or

    • Cyanmethemoglobin method (where facilities permit)

Data Interpretation

  • Normal reference ranges

  • Common sources of error in manual counting

  • Recording and tabulation of results

Day 3: Packed Cell Volume (PCV) & Case Interpretation

Concepts Covered

  • Importance of hematocrit / PCV in diagnosis

  • Correlation between hematological parameters

Hands-On Training

  • PCV estimation using

    • Micro-hematocrit centrifuge or

    • Improvised/manual method

  • Interpretation of combined results

    • RBC count

    • WBC count

    • Hemoglobin

    • PCV

Outcome

  • Case-based interpretation of hematological findings

  • Preparation of a structured results sheet

  • Discussion on basic clinical correlations

Workshop Outcomes

By the end of this workshop, participants will:

  • Prepare and stain high-quality blood smears

  • Identify blood cells under a microscope

  • Perform manual RBC and WBC counts

  • Estimate hemoglobin and PCV

  • Interpret basic hematology results

  • Document findings in a standard laboratory format
