3-Day Hands-On Workshop on Molecular Biology Techniques

This workshop introduces participants to core molecular biology techniques, focusing on DNA extraction, analysis, electrophoresis principles, and PCR planning. Designed for safe and accessible learning, it uses non-hazardous samples, dyes, and virtual tools where required.


Day 1: DNA Extraction & Quality Assessment

  • Introduction to DNA structure and function

  • Sources of DNA and extraction principles

  • Importance of DNA purity and concentration

Hands-On Training

  • DNA extraction from safe biological sources

    • Banana tissue

    • Blood (educational/sample-based)

    • Cheek (buccal) cells

  • Removal of proteins and contaminants

  • DNA quality assessment using

    • 260/280 absorbance ratio (if spectrophotometer available)

    • Visual inspection of extracted DNA (precipitate/stringing)

Day 2: Gel Electrophoresis Demonstration & Analysis

  • Principles of gel electrophoresis

  • DNA migration, size separation, and visualization methods

  • Safety considerations in nucleic acid handling

Hands-On Demonstration

  • Preparation of agarose gel (demo-based)

  • Gel electrophoresis using safe dyes

    • Methylene blue staining

    • Food dyes with model DNA ladders (for concept demonstration)

  • Interpretation of band patterns and migration distance

Day 3: PCR Theory, Virtual Planning & Primer Design
